Molecular Diagnostics
The Molecular Diagnostic Laboratory (MDL) of Living Cell Technologies Limited provides high quality rapid diagnostic testing options to veterinary practices across New Zealand and Asia Pacific. Delivering exceptional quality diagnostic results is a touchstone of our laboratory practice. LCT MDL has stringent internal quality control policy, numerous external quality assessment schemes and IANZ accreditation to NZS/ISO 15819:2007.
The strengths of LCT’s MDL are its flexibility, refined analysis, high-throughput, quality assurance, result accuracy and reproducibility.
The strengths of LCT’s MDL are its flexibility, refined analysis, high-throughput, quality assurance, result accuracy and reproducibility.
The laboratory currently performs polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and quantitative PCR for a number of viruses (porcine circovirus type 2, porcine lymphotropic herpesvirus Type 2, porcine cytomegalovirus, porcine hepatitis E virus, porcine encephalomyocarditis virus, porcine enterovirus type 1, 2 and 3, bovine viral diarrhoea, porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus, porcine endogenous retrovirus, cytochrome oxidase subunit II, human endogenous retrovirus, rotavirus, reovirus, norwalk-like calicivirus, bovine coronovirus, porcine enteric calicivirus). These PCR tests are designed to be highly sensitive and specific for infectious RNA and DNA agents.
This technique is also finding wider acceptance within the veterinary community. MDL also performs serological testing for a number of pathological agents such as Hepatitis E virus and Toxoplasma gondii. LCT MDL uses the LightCycler 480 real-time PCR system to perform cutting edge analyses using High Resolution Melting (HRM).
This HRM technology enables LCT MDL to perform a wide range of applications that includes:
- Mutation discovery (gene scanning)
- Screening for loss of heterozygosity
- DNA fingerprinting
SNP genotyping - Characterization of haplotype blocks
- DNA methylation analysis
DNA mapping - Species identification
Somatic acquired mutation ratios - HLA compatibility typing
- Association (case/control) studies
- Allelic prevalence in a population
- Identification of candidate predisposition genes
- It is cost effective compared with other genotyping technologies such as sequencing and Taqman SNP typing.
- It is fast and powerful thus able to accurately genotype huge numbers of samples in rapid time.
- It is simple. With a good quality HRM assay powerful genotyping can be performed by non-geneticists in any laboratory with access to an HRM capable real-time PCR machine.
- HRM is thus a simpler and much more cost-effective way to characterize samples.
LCT MDL currently services all molecular diagnostic needs for Living Cell Technologies and constitutes the following integral functions:
Support of the clinical trials for pig islets xenotransplantation.
Clinical diagnosis and monitoring of viral (pathogen) infection in donors.
Research and development projects in animal virology and genetics.
The LCT Molecular Diagnostic Laboratory is available for projects and subcontracts in agriculture and veterinary diagnostic and genetics. For more information please contact us at bizdev@lctglobal.com
